Blogger Gets 4 Years In Prison For "Insulting" President Mubarak & Islam

Recently, I ran a post on the arrest and scheduled trial of Egyptian Blogger Abdel Karim Nabil. He was charged with writing posts "insulting" to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Islam. As I noted then, this case is not an isolated incident in Mubarek's Egypt but reflects a common tactic being employed by Mubarek to stifle moderate, pro-democracy voices.

By accident, I discovered what has become of Nabil. Buried in this piece by CBS news, a piece on allegations of torture made by the Egyptian cleric purportedly kidnapped from Italy by CIA officials who then rendered him to Egypt, is this blurb:

The blogger was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison by an Egyptian court. Abdel Kareem Nabil received three years in prison for insulting Islam and one year for insulting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

From the Bush Administrtion, we can expect a pro forma tut-tut from the State Department ... and then, nothing more.

  • This appears to be one of the subjects on which your supposed sockpuppet, webhub, took you to task in the past on the ground of insipidness.

In case Patterico sneaks a peek over here (the "won't give you another thought" line is yet another lie), why don't you remind your readers of your previous post on this subject. That might also refresh Patterico's recollection, in case he missed it when reviewing your blog for several hours the another night.

As webhub told you before, there's no first amendment in Egypt. Get over it. There's more pressing issues to discuss....

  • Mr Puppet,

You wanna talk about insipid? Look at the 80 gazillion posts on this site about someone named Patterico. What could be less interesting or important?

The fact that our government exposes its hypocrisy time and again in the middle east is much more pressing than whether or not Patterico remembers your past posts to this site.

  • My gut tells me "anonymous" is more prankster than true critic of the Patterico takedown. Three posts responding to different claims from knothead, especially given knothead's actions that prevented me from posting responses on his site, comes up just a bit short of "80 gazillion."

But "anon's" note does inspire me to post knothead's last remark - one I originally was going to ignore. So it's time to look forward to one more insipid post on knothead.
