Stand Up to Injustice! He Did

1 Comments:

  • Last night on public television, American Experience profiled Eleanor Roosevelt. Her advocacy for equal treatment for blacks was highly controversial. Recall that ER resigned from DAR when they refused Marian Anderson permission to sing at DC's Constitution Hall. In 1939 Anderson then sang for tens of thousands on the national mall--sticking it to DAR racists. Southern papers blamed ER for the 1943 Detroit riots.

Conservatives like to pretend everything is fine now. "Pretend" is the key word. Another key word nowadays is "cover"--explained in a fine article in last Sunday's NYT magazine describing the workings of modern discrimination.
